History:
Koust lived a pretty simple life for a long time. He started out living in a small house in Kyoto and grew up as a poor kid. He wasn't able to go to school much; he had to take care of his mother. His father left them when he was young to track down a bounty. His father was a bounty hunter, and a good one; at least that's what his mother told him. Most of the week Koust would have to stay home and clean the house and go shopping for dinner on the money his mother earned the night before.

His mother worked odd jobs to keep them alive and well. Every day she would leave before he woke up and return just before he went to bed. Koust was able to go to school maybe once a week, twice at most. The teachers didn't like him because he was hardly ever there, and the kids didn't like him because he was poor and acted weird. He never raised his hand, never played with the kids, and never talked in between classes like the others did. Right after school was over he would head home.

Now this went on for a few months. Until, finally, the kids started bullying him for being weird. It all started on the first day he was able to go back in a month; his mother had fallen ill so he was taking care of her. When he got there a big kid confronted him. He accused Koust of doing something bad; koust couldn't figure it all out. Koust knew the kids name to be Shin, and he was a bully; and a tough one. So Koust ran when he started at him. He surprised himself at how agile he was. He kept the bully at a distance, until he accidentally ran down a dead end.

That is when things got out of hand. In the end Koust went to school with a black eye, swollen lip, and many cuts. Needless to say the teacher didn't like it, and didn't believe when he said Shin did it. Koust decided then and there that he was going to be better than him. After that day Koust found a job a job at the docks helping out with packages and such. He couldn't read very well but he could read enough to help out. So everyday after school he would go down and help out an old man who worked inside the warehouse separating crates and shipments according to where they need to go.

Koust never knew the old mans name, but he became like a father- or rather grandfather- figure to him. During their work they would talk about everything, but the old mans name. After work he would help Koust with his homework and became something of a teacher to him. He taught Koust many things about the world, too. In fact it's because of the Old Man that Koust wanted to explore the world. The Old Man told him a story once, about how a pirate hunter had set out on an adventure to stop a band of pirates from ransacking a village. The pirate hunter single-handedly defeated each of the pirates by using his own handmade handgun.

Koust always dreamt of doing stuff like that afterwards. Every now and then he would always ask the Old Man to tell him the story again. He would smile and laugh, and then start weaving the story all over again. And Koust always sat there, entranced, as if it was his first time hearing it.

As time went by Koust got bigger and smarter. Eventually it got to the point where the Old Man had no more book knowledge to teach him. Koust was disappointed when he was told this, but he was okay with it. Koust was fifteen now and was currently taking of his mother with his job at the docks. He and the Old Man still had their conversations, but they didn't spend any time after together. One night though, as their shift was ending, Koust asked him to tell the story again. The Old Man laughed and asked him why he liked the story so much. Koust just replied that he had a weird feeling about it, as if he knew the story before he had heard it the first time.

The Old Man told the story again, weaving the tale like never before, his hands moved dramatically during the story. As if he was conducting an orchestra. Koust was mesmerized. It was as if the story dove into him, it changed him. After that night Koust spent his time devoted to school, work, and training. He trained to be a pirate hunter, just like the man in the story. He knew that the story had to be false, but he couldn't stop the feeling that he had.

One night, when he was about to go to work his mother stopped him. She was dressed beautifully that day, it was summer, she had on the kimono he had bought her and was smiling when she stopped him. But that smile quickly turned into a frown as she embraced him. She started to cry, saying that she didn't want him to go. That she didn't want to lose another man in her life. Koust knew she was talking about his dad, but he couldn't stop himself from asking her what happened to him.

She sniffled and wiped her eyes, saying that it was about time he knew. They sat down and she explained everything to him, while attempting to hold back tears. His dad was a pirate hunter and a good one apparently. It had happened shortly after Koust was born. There were pirates about to raze the city. Koust never knew because they had moved to a different city afterwards. His dad had gone out, the captain was famous for his big attacks on towns and cities, and was worth a lot. It was exactly like the story the Old Man told him. But it didn't have a good ending like his did. His dad was killed by the captain. According to all the stories he almost killed the pirate, but his mother didn't know if that was true or not.

Koust couldn't believe what she was telling him. He ran to the Old Man, yelling at him to tell him why he never told him that the man in the story was his father. The Old Man laughed like usual and told him to calm down. He apologized and told Koust that he wasn't sure if it was the right time. The Old Man had known Koust's father, and started to tell Koust all about him, which took quite a long time. When Koust got home he immediately asked his mother to tell him more about his father. She was glad to share her memories of him.

Koust began his training the next day. He started out by throwing small rocks at cans and bottles. After a few months he was able to get a few daggers. He had inherited his father’s precision. He almost never missed. Now, his mother told him to stop but Koust didn't listen. He continued with his training, even getting the Old Man to help him out. When Koust turned seventeen the Old Man told him to stay after work. Having nothing better to do, Koust did so. He didn't expect anything, but then again; you should always expect the unexpected. The Old Man finally told Koust his name, Sasuke Kutsunagi- his grandfather - and handed him two pistols. He said that it was time for him to grow up, and then quietly left.

It was a couple years later when Koust left. His mother was against it, but she couldn't stop him. He was setting out to become better than his father. There were no feelings of revenge, just a feeling that he had to become better. It was like his gift to his father, he was going to show him what he could do. He met with Sasuke- Koust still called him Old Man- and said his good-byes, receiving his laugh and a hand-shake in return. Sasuke told him that he had one last surprise for Koust, a boat. It was his now, and he couldn't have been happier.

It wasn't a big boat, but it was big enough to go across the seas at a decent rate. Sasuke taught him how to sail, so he was good to go. He said his final good-byes, promising to return after a while, and set off to become a famous pirate hunter. With map in hand, he set out to

Koust sat there in the bar waiting for his target, just waiting for an opening. Koust was tracking a well known pirate in these parts. He apparently went by the name of "Killer." Yeah real original, he thought. But he was surrounded by women and Koust didn't have an opening. So he was sitting at the bar milking a water with his hood up and a hand on his gun. He could've shot the man, but he didn't want to make a scene; who knew how many more pirates there- or hunters- was looking for some cash. He had been waiting for the better part of the night.

It wasn't until late in the night that the man left, no ladies were in tow- or hunters for that matter. Koust finished off his water and staggered out, as if he was drunk. "Killer" paid him no mind. Heh, too bad I have to take him in alive, he thought. He casually stumbled his way up to the man and put his arm around his shoulder. "Hey, hows aboot you and mees go somewhere and geth drunk," he said, trying his best to sound drunk. Killer replied, "How about you go find yourself a woman." He removed Koust's arm and started walking faster.

"Alright, fine then." Koust stopped and started speaking loudly, "how about we head for the naval office in town, 'Killer'." The pirate stopped dead in his tracks, apparently frightened. "How did you know I was in there?" He asked calmly, "I'm pretty sure I've never been to that bar before." Koust laughed, in truth is was all luck. He had been trying to find a regular hangout for this man, but couldn't find any. So he decided to rest up a bit and try again the next day, and that's when he showed up in there. "I've been tracking you for quite some time, and figured that this was where you were going," he lied. He pulled out his gun and aimed toward the pirate.

Killer laughed at the hunter, "You should know that I'm no good dead."

“I know that's why I'm gonna shoot you in your left arm and leg."

And so he did. "You know, it's not hard to figure out you're left handed," Koust said while tying him up. He hoisted the man up, over his shoulder, and took him to the naval office. He didn't get much reward, but it was enough to sleep and eat on for the next week or so.
